Two drown in Co Cork river

A young man and woman have died in a drowning incident in Co Cork, gardaĆ­ confirmed tonight.

The bodies of the man and woman, believed to be in their early 20s, were taken from the Awbeg River in Castletownroche late this afternoon.

A garda spokesman said the incident was believed to be an accidental drowning.

The bodies of the pair, who have yet to be named, were spotted in the river by a canoeist and removed by the fire service.

GardaĆ­ said a search of the river was launched after the discovery.

Thousands of people took to the waterways and sea across Ireland as temperatures soared into the mid-20s.

Another young man, Aidan McDonnell, 25, from Kilfian, Ballina Co Mayo drowned yesterday after a punt he had taken onto the River Moy with a friend overturned.
