Three newcomers for Monaghan
01/02/2006 - 01:47:37Three players are poised to make their league debuts for Monaghan in Sunday’s Allianz NFL Division 1A opener against Fermanagh at Clontibret (throw-in 2.30pm).
Paul McGuigan, Donal Morgan and Shane Smyth will each get another chance to impress manager Seamus McEnaney.
Left corner back Morgan and corner forward Smyth both helped guide the Farney through to the Dr McKenna Cup final on February 19 from the recent group stages.
McGuigan lined out for his college, the University of Ulster, Jordanstown, during the McKenna competition and was solid at right corner back.
Injury have ruled both Gary McQuaid and James Coyle out of the Monaghan line-up for the weekend.
Sunday will be a momentous day for Monaghan supporters as it marks their side’s first appearance in a Division 1 league match for 20 years. They earned promotion last season as Division 2 champions.
Ironically, Fermanagh were the only side to beat Monaghan in the 2005 league, winning their Scotstown duel by 2-13 to 0-13 last March.
