Tech firms' jobs boost for Galway

Ninety jobs are to be created with major investments by two international companies, it was announced today.

Computer giant Hewlett Packard is to expand its R&D facilities at its Galway plant at a cost of €11m, bringing 50 new posts.

And online retailer Buy.com is basing its European Operations Centre in the city, rolling out 40 positions over four years.

Tánaiste and Enterprise Minister Mary Coughlan said the investments highlighted Ireland‘s capability to attract top global employers.

“Ireland has a proven ability to satisfy the needs of highly inventive and technologically advanced companies and these projects are an excellent further endorsement of our well established reputation,” she said.

Recruitment for Buy.com will begin immediately with positions available in multilingual customer support, online sales and marketing, finance and software design and development.

Buy.com has more than 12 million customers worldwide and its operation will be based in Galway city centre.

Neel Grover, CEO and president of the internet giant, said Ireland was chosen despite facing tough competition.

“Ireland faced strong international competition for this investment, but Galway was chosen because of its multilingual skilled workforce, Ireland’s position within the European market and the presence of other Internet service companies operating here.”

HP‘s Galway operation is based in Ballybrit in the east of the city.

It is one of the largest multinational companies in Ireland with more than 4,000 people employed in operations in Leixlip, Dublin, Galway and Belfast.
