The Society of St Vincent de Paul is demanding that the Government take action to break the cycle of poverty in the forthcoming Budget.

In its pre-Budget submission, the society is calling for measures to tackle child poverty and educational disadvantage, as well as improvements in the health services and social housing.

It said 600,000 Irish people were living in poverty despite the booming economy.

Society chairman Professor John Monaghan said: "It's our contention that now is the most appropriate time to break the cycle of poverty because never have we had it so good.

"Tax returns are way ahead of targets, unemployment is down and growth rates are up, so if we cannot do it now, our belief is it can never be done."
