O’Keeffe rejects TUI claims on teacher numbers

Education Minister Batt O'Keeffe has strongly rejecting claims that more than 3,000 secondary school teachers are set to lose their jobs due to Government cutbacks.

The Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI) made the claim last week after the Department of Education published figures on teacher numbers for the coming school year.

The department said the figures were based on initial and provisional allocations and the TUI was being alarmist.

Speaking yesterday, Minister O'Keeffe also accused the TUI of causing unnecessary worry to parents.

He said no teacher on a permanent contract would lose their job.
