McCartneys abused while distributing leaflets in Belfast

The family of murdered Belfast man Robert McCartney have accused republicans of forcing them to abandon distributing leaflets in the Short Strand area of the city last night.

The sisters and fiancee of the dead man said they were distributing leaflets calling for a vigil for their loved one when they were abused by a group of people and told to leave the area.

Mr McCartney, a 33-year-old father-of-two, was beaten and stabbed to death outside a pub in Belfast on January 30, allegedly by senior IRA members.

His family have accused the republican movement of mounting a cover-up to ensure the killers are not brought to justice.
