MacMillan backs support for McLeish

John Macmillan, secretary of the Rangers Supporters’ Clubs, believes it would have been a disaster for the club to throw a new manager into the most crucial matches of the season.

Speculation had intensified over the future of Alex McLeish after Rangers slipped 12 points behind Celtic and Hearts in the Bank of Scotland Premier League, before exiting the CIS Insurance Cup at the hands of Celtic last week.

But crunch talks with chairman David Murray and chief executive Martin Bain yesterday resulted in a stay of execution until the start of December. That means McLeish has just three matches to save his job – three matches that could help shape Rangers’ season.

Wins over Celtic and Hibernian would allow the Scottish champions to claw their way back into the SPL title race and show they are still capable of competing with their Old Firm rivals for honours.

Sandwiched between those matches is a Champions League game against Porto, which could make or break their chances of becoming the first Scottish club to reach the knockout stages of the competition.

“It does not surprise me that he has been given more time,” said Macmillan.
