Klien given green light
14/04/2005 - 18:27:38Christian Klien will be allowed to act as Red Bull’s third driver over the next three grands prix after world governing body the FIA changed their rules.
Red Bull asked their rival teams for permission to change the rules governing third drivers, who are allowed to practice on the Friday of a grand prix, following their decision to replace Klien with Vitantonio Liuzzi.
The pair were not allowed to simply swap roles as Klien, 22, fell foul of a rule which prohibits drivers who have raced in more than six grands prix in the previous two years acting as third driver.
But the other nine teams have agreed to a rule change, allowing Klien to test on the Friday of San Marino, Spain and Monaco before he is expected to resume racing duties.
An FIA statement confirmed that “following a unanimous request from the teams” the restriction concerning race experience “has been deleted”.
It added: “As a result, any driver with a Formula One super licence may now run as a third driver on Friday.”
