AIK chasing Mjallby

AIK have confirmed they want to speak to Celtic defender Johan Mjallby over a possible move back to his former club.

The 33-year-old is currently out of contract and, although the Scottish champions have offered the player a new deal, Mjallby has delayed his final decision until after Euro 2004.

And that could be to AIK’s advantage, as the Stockholm outfit admit they will also meet the Swedish international when he returns from Portugal.

“We will definitely meet for a talk about the future,” AIK sports director Peter Kisfaludy told Swedish newspaper Expressen.

“Mjallby is exactly the type of strong character we need in the team.”

Mjallby enjoyed a nine-year spell with AIK between 1989 and 1998, and admits he would be more than happy to play for the club despite previously ruling out a return to his homeland.

“I’ve changed my mind. I would certainly think about moving back home back to AIK again,” Mjallby confessed.

“It’s nice that Celtic still want me. I appreciate it. I don’t need to give an answer until after the European Championships.

“But it’s time to start thinking about moving home. There is no other club than AIK for me.

“I’ll sit down with AIK and and discuss everything,” he added.
