The number of people working in Ireland grew by almost 4% the 12 months to the end of June, according to figures published today by the Central Statistics Office.

The CSO says just over two million people were working in the Republic at the midway stage of 2007, an increase of almost 80,000 since June 2006.

Female employment levels were up to 60.3% from 58.8%, while 239,000 foreign nationals were working in Ireland at the end of June.

The CSO figures also show that construction employment increased by 6.7% between June 2006 and June 2007, despite the recent slowdown in the housing market.
