INTO backing national testing for primary schools

The main primary schoolteachers' union, the INTO, is backing a new national testing system for primary schools.

The tests were first announced by former Minister for Education Noel Dempsey last year, but were greeted with heavy opposition from the INTO.

The groundbreaking agreement with the union follows a pledge by the new Minister for Education, Mary Hanafin, that league tables to measure school performance will not be introduced.
