Huge increase in private sector pay claims

30/08/2008 - 11:04:45

A quarter of a million pay claims have already been lodged by unions representing private sector workers.

It comes just weeks after the collapse of the national pay talks.

A top union official has described the last month as an "intense" period of lodging claims.

The Taoiseach Brian Cowen is expected to invite the social partners to meet next week, in a bid to restart negotiations.

Chair of the ICTU's Private Sector Committee Jerry Shanahan said most of the claims are seeking pay increases of at least 5%.
