Greens get celebrity support
02/06/2009 - 20:32:58Financial guru Eddie Hobbs, celebrity chef Darina Allen and broadcaster Duncan Stewart have endorsed the Green Party ahead of Friday’s elections.
They all feature in a special advertisement, entitled 'Reasons To Vote Green This Friday' outlining five reasons to choose Green Party candidates.
Consumer advocate and broadcaster Eddie Hobbs said: "In the coming age of scarcity the prosperity or ruin of the Irish economy pivots on the speed that we can become energy independent. The Greens get it. So does Obama.
"That’s why, even though facing the huge challenge of living with Fianna Fáil, the Greens continue to get my support."
Chef Darina Allen, who runs the Ballymaloe Cookery School in Shanagarry, Co Cork said: "What the Greens are doing to get people involved in growing and appreciating local food is good for everyone and a tangible benefit to all our economic futures.
"Thanks to the work of Trevor Sargent as Minister for Food and Horticulture, I see people all over Ireland getting involved with allotments, farmers’ markets and developing local food economies. This is vital to make communities more sustainable and more attractive to tourists and new businesses."
TV presenter and award-winning architect Duncan Stewart said: "I fully support the many initiatives introduced by the Green ministers since taking office that have helped to sustain our now stressed environment and our daunting energy challenges – supporting home energy saving retrofits and fostering renewable energy solutions.
"It is the first time, in my lifetime that I have seen real progress at government level on the introduction of new and critical environmental measures that will help sustain our future."
