Portsmouth went into the game with a very attack-minded side to face a Birmingham team they beat in the FA Cup on Saturday as manager Avram Grant fielded Frederic Piquionne, Aruna Dindane and Danny Webber from the start.

But the Premier League’s bottom side were without injured midfielders Hassan Yebda (knee), John Utaka (groin) and Kevin-Prince Boateng (ankle), while defender Ricardo Rocha was suspended.

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish handed January signing Michel his first start for the club since his move from Sporting Gijon.
