The Government is set to abolish the controversial Groceries Order.

The measure, which has been in place since 1987, outlaws the below-cost selling of packaged groceries.

It has been criticised by consumer groups and the Competition Authority for keeping prices artificially high.

According to a reports today, the Minister for Enterprise Micheal Martin will bring proposals for the abolition of the order before the Cabinet on Tuesday.

The proposals are also understood to include stronger measures to prevent predatory pricing by large retailers.
