The Government is reportedly prepared to suspend civil servants who refuse to carry out their work as part of a campaign of industrial action.

The Sunday Tribune reports that Finance Minister Brian Lenihan has circulated a memo to his Cabinet colleagues detailing a "co-ordinated approach" to deal with the industrial action and asking them to identify areas where there would be a serious impact on the public and develop contingency plans.

It is also reported the memo opens up the possibility of workers being suspended for not carrying out their duties.

The Minister says discussions with the unions should be re-visited if possible. The Government will not reverse pay cuts already made, but may give a commitment not to cut pay again in exchange for savings through reform.
