Gormley wants to see Car Free Day taken seriously

Minister for the Environment John Gormley has said he would like to see Car Free Day being treated seriously in Ireland over the coming the years.

The European-wide event normally passes off without notice in Ireland, with only a handful of urban areas deciding to ban cars for the day.

Just two streets in Dublin city centre - Parnell Square East and Merrion Square West - are due to close to traffic when the event takes place on September 22 this year.

Critics say this highlights the farce that the event has become in Ireland.

However, Mr Gormley says he is determined to see Car Free Day being taken as seriously in Ireland as the rest of Europe.

He says he wants more streets closed to traffic and also wants to see the event taking place on a weekday, when the lack of traffic would be more noticeable.
