Garda figures show serious crimes rose 3% last year

The amount of serious crimes investigated by gardaĆ­ increased by 3% last year, according to the Garda Siochana's annual report for 2005.

The report says 54 murders were committed during the year, an increase of 17 on 2004.

However, the number of robberies being committed with firearms was down from 428 to 353, with two-thirds of them taking place in Dublin.

Elsewhere, the report also shows that almost 5,500 offences were committed by people on bail, the majority of them thefts and burglaries.
