GAA may name trophy or stadium after Michael Collins

04/01/2006 - 09:04:17

GAA President Sean Kelly has revealed his desire to honour the memory of Michael Collins by naming a trophy or stadium him.

Mr Kelly has described the absence of any official GAA recognition of the Corkman as a "major historical omission".

The GAA president has often been touted as a Fine Gael election candidate, but insists his suggestions are not politically motivated.

Michael Collins was a major player in the Irish battle for independence after the 1916 Rising and signed the 1921 treaty that led to the division of the island into north and south, before being shot dead by the IRA in the civil war that followed.

He was also a hurler and supporter of the GAA.
