French champions thrashed by Lille
06/05/2006 - 22:15:29Lyon may be five-times French champions but they were on the receiving end of a 4-0 thrashing at Lille.
Geoffrey Dernis opened the scoring for Lille while Peter Odemwingie (two) and Jean Makoun opened the floodgates after the break.
The defeat, only the fourth for Lyon this season, saw Lille complete the double over the runaway champions but more importantly come close to sealing third place and a spot in the preliminary round of next season’s Champions League.
A point in their last match will seal a qualifying spot for Lille although they could be pipped by Marseille who were held 2-2 by relegated Strasbourg.
Samir Nasri opened the scoring for Marseille only for Yacine Abdessadki and Rudy Carlier to give the advantage to the visiting Alsatians.
However, Franck Ribery snatched a point for Marseille who may have to settle for a UEFA Cup spot.
Like Lyon, the other two teams to win a trophy this season – Paris St Germain and Nancy – also came unstuck.
Nancy lost 3-1 at home to Auxerre while PSG, who last weekend won the Coupe de France, were humbled 4-2 at home by already-relegated Ajaccio.
Second-placed Bordeaux needed a late Jean-Claude Darcheville penalty to beat Nantes 1-0.
Relegated Metz lost 2-1 at Nice despite taking the lead through Laurent Agouazzi after first Sammy Traore and former Manchester United forward David Bellion scored for Les Aiglons.
Sochaux and Troyes both sealed their berths in the top flight last weekend and celebrated with a 1-1 draw, the match between Toulouse and Monaco finished 3-3 while the Le Mans-Lens and St Etienne-Rennes games finished goalless.
