Finalists locked together
17/10/2004 - 11:47:11Ernie Els, chasing a record sixth win on his 35th birthday, and Lee Westwood, seeking his second victory, were all square after nine holes of their 36-hole final in the HSBC World Match Play championship at Wentworth.
Els took the lead first when his opponent began by driving into the trees but the South African did the same on the third and then, after both players had eagled the long fourth, fell two down with further bogeys at the fifth and sixth.
The world number two got his act back together, though. He hit a seven-iron to five feet on the seventh and six-iron just as close at the ninth and birdied both.
Westwood had beaten Els on the two previous occasions they had clashed in the tournament.
