FG launches fresh attack on penalty points loopholes
27/02/2006 - 08:05:30Fine Gael has launched a fresh attack on the penalty points system, claiming it is not working because of widespread loopholes in the legislation.
They party has claimed motorists with 12 points are continuing to drive because some gardaí are so confused by the system they do not know how to remove licences from disqualified drivers.
Others do not bother handing over their licences when asked to do so by their local authority, while more still are unaware that they have even accumulated 12 points.
Fine Gael is planning to table a number of amendments to the existing legislation this week in an effort to clear up the confusion.
