Farmers want Govt support to ensure future EU funding

Farmers are calling for support from the Government to stop the European Union from cutting their funding.

The Irish Farmers’ Association says the money they get from the EU will drop dramatically if the Government doesn't fight on their behalf.

The country’s 150,000 farmers will receive €880m from the EU Agricultural Fund for Rural Development in 2007.

However other countries like Germany, the UK and Holland want the amount reduced.

John Dillon of the IFA says farmers need to be supported as the only way Ireland will continue to get money from the EU in the future is through agriculture.
