E-voting should have been further analysed - CAG

28/09/2004 - 18:51:34

The government's electronic voting project has come under fire in the annual report of the Comptroller and Auditor General.

The CAG has said the electronic voting project should have been subjected to more rigorous cost benefit analysis in view of the scale of the commitments involved.

However it has said it was not unreasonable for the Department of the Environment to proceed on the basis of results in its pilot runs.

The Comptroller has said the decision to purchase an addition 400 machines for the Nice referendum without modifications resulted in unavoidable cost of €680,000 being incurred.

It has said the true value for money will depend on future decisions on electronic voting.
