Draw made for inaugral AIB Cup
03/11/2005 - 17:30:22Munster rivals Shannon and Cork Constitution have been pitted together in the first round of the newly-created AIB Cup competition.
The draw for the inaugural event, which runs in tandem with the All-Ireland League this season, was made today by IRFU President Andy Crawford and AIB Sponsorship manager Jim Kelly at Lansdowne Road.
In undoubtedly the clash of the first round, seven-times Division One champions Shannon will face Cork Con on Sunday, December 18. Another plum tie is the clash of top flight sides Buccaneers and Ballymena in the only preliminary round fixture (Saturday, November 12).
The first round, which takes place over the weekend of December 17-18, will also see Tipperary club Cashel, the only junior club in the competition, face Division One regulars Galwegians at Crowley Park.
The first round winners will go into the hat again for the quarter-finals, which will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2006.
Saturday, February 25 is the date for the semi-finals, while the new competition culminates with the AIB Cup Final on Saturday, April 8, the venue for which is yet to be confirmed.
