One in seven Irish people were at risk of poverty in 2008, down from one in six in 2007, according to the Central Statistics Office.

A survey on Income and Living Conditions shows the rate of consistant poverty fell in the year to 4.2% - a decrease of almost 1%.

However, the figures show children are the most likely to experience deprivation with over one third suffering at least one form of deprivation.

Overall Ireland's risk of poverty rate is 18% - 2 points above the EU average of 16.
