Consumer body demands Govt action to end rip-off prices
21/04/2005 - 09:30:26The Consumers' Association has called on the Government to take decisive action to end the rip-off of Irish consumers by greedy retailers.
A study conducted by the Government's own Consumer Strategy Group has reportedly concluded that the high prices being charged for goods and services are unjustified.
Reports this morning said the unpublished study found that the high prices charged by pubs, banks, doctors, dentists, restaurants and many other businesses cannot be explained by high operating costs.
Consumers' Association spokesman Dermot Jewell said ordinary people had been aware of this rip-off for some time and it was now time for the Government to do something about it.
"Hopefully, when this report is launched, we'll see that action and we'll see that move forward to benefit the consumer," he said.
