Anna earns step-up in class
08/09/2005 - 14:27:46Anna Pavlova shrugged off a penalty for a recent Newcastle success to record a comfortable win in the opening race at Doncaster.
Her trainer, Richard Fahey, had considered running the juvenile in the Group Two May Hill Stakes later on the card, but he decided to take the nursery option instead in the Queen’s Own Yorkshire Dragoons Ladies Day Stakes and the move paid off.
Anna Pavlova appeared unsuited by the steady early pace and was tapped for toe at one stage.
However, she picked up strongly for Paul Hanagan and seeing the mile out well, the 7-1 shot came clear to beat Urban Tiger by a length.
“I actually contemplated running her in the May Hill but I’m a big believer in letting them earn a shot at that sort of company and she’s earned a shot at something now,” Fahey said after greeting his 68th winner of the season.
“She’s improving and she’s quite a good filly.
“It was a farce of a race. They sprinted and left her a bit and it was just her class that got her through.
“I wanted to see what happened here but there is a Listed fillies’ race for her somewhere.”
The victory was a timely birthday present for Hanagan, who is 25 today.
