Aer Lingus has reported a 29% in its operating profits for last year following a 5.5% increase in passenger numbers and continuing moves to become a low-fares airline.

The company said today that its operating profits for 2004 were €107m, up from €83m in 2003.

It said last year saw passenger numbers increase by 5.5% to seven million, while the number of transatlantic passengers it carried increased by 7.2% to a record 1.2 million.

Commenting on the results, Aer Lingus chairman John Sharman said he was pleased with the positive performance and paid tribute to the airline's staff.

However, he also said a failure to agree new work practices posed a threat to this year's performance.
