UUP leader David Trimble was dealt a stinging blow last night when the South Antrim branch of his party spurned his preferred candidate for the upcoming British general election.

UUP leader David Trimble was dealt a stinging blow last night when the South Antrim branch of his party spurned his preferred candidate for the upcoming British general election.

The local constituency party voted for the second time in six months against selecting a pro-Agreement and pro-Trimble candidate.

Party members rejected his suggestion of Assembly man Jim Wilson, instead choosing David Burnside, who lost September's by-election to the DUP.
