At least 500 people have been killed after a severe earthquake rocked the entire Indian subcontinent.

Many more are feared dead or trapped under collapsed buildings.

A five-storey building on the coastal town of Bhuj collapsed killing 150 people and there were at least 130 deaths in Ahmedabad.

About 70 children and some teachers are feared dead in the debris of their school building in one part of Ahmedabad, while in another district 19 engineering students are believed trapped in their collapsed college building.

Most of the reported deaths were in Gujarat state in western India.

In the Gujarat city Surat 18 bodies were pulled from the rubble of three buildings and 40 people are in hospital.

In Pakistan, a child and an adult died when their two-story home collapsed in the Pakistani city of Hyderabad, rescue workers said.

Nepal was also hit by the 6.9-magnitude earthquake.
