A post mortem will be carried out this evening on the body of an elderly man found dead at his Co Offaly home this morning.

A post mortem will be carried out this evening on the body of an elderly man found dead at his Co Offaly home this morning.

The man, who was in his eighties, was discovered at a house in Birr after gardai received reports of a fire at the premises.

His death is being treated as suspicious and the scene remains sealed off for technical examination.

The State pathologist, Dr John Harbison, will carry out the post mortem at Tullamore General Hospital later today.
