Retailers are warning they want compensation for the frontline role they will play in changing the country over to the Euro from December 31.
Retailers and publicans are expected to play a major role in the first six weeks of 2002 in replacing punts with Euros and say it is unfair that they will have to shoulder the associated costs.
Shops, garages, bars and a whole range of other retailers will effectively change millions of pounds into Euros during the first six weeks of 2002 when they accept punts but issue change in Euros.
In addition to dealing with the confusion of the public and staff, the retailers say they will have the addes burden and cost of getting large amounts of punts to banks to be changed.
Now the traders say they want compensation and they have the backing of the employers body IBEC.
The matter is due to be raised in talks with the Government, but so far ministers are not giving the case a sympathetic hearing.
It is understood however, that a security plan is being drawn up for the mass distribution of the new currency throughout the country before the changeover.
