Lawyers in Australia are to put forward a plan to use the web to streamline the legal process.

Representatives from the New South Wales Law Society are scheduled to meet with senior judges to discuss a proposal to move a proportion of their business to the internet.

They believe that conducting certain legal discussions in online chat rooms would save them hours in time lost to procedure.

"At any time in the district court, you'll have 150 lawyers sitting and all they are waiting for is a ten minute slot," said New South Wales Law Society president Nick Meagher.

State Attorney General Bob Debus has already said that he supports the idea in principle.

Some New South Wales lawyers hope eventually to conduct entire cases online.
