War veteran gets his medals after 55 years

A Canadian Second World War veteran has finally received his medals, 55 years late.

A Canadian Second World War veteran has finally received his medals, 55 years late.

Norman Ryan was awarded the War Medal and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal after enlisting in the air force in 1942.

But they have just arrived at his home in Ottawa, despite being posted from an office in the same city.

Cancer sufferer Mr Ryan, now 79, says he doesn't know why it took so long for him to get the medals for his time in the Royal Canadian Air Force.

"They told me they'd mail them to me when I got out. Maybe they couldn't find me because I lived on a farm. I would like to have had them sooner. I'll be dead in a year.," he said.

"I was in the Legion for 25 years and I had nothing to wear on my uniform."

A spokeswoman for Veterans' Affairs Canada, told the Ottawa Sun some medals were not delivered at the end of the war because the military had the wrong address.
