There is speculation that John Bruton’s leadership of Fine Gael could be challenged within a matter of hours.
Both men tipped to mount the challenge have gone to ground, but a media statement is expected later.
The speculation over a possible challenge was fuelled by reports in the Sunday papers about a secret meeting between Michael Noonan and Jim Mitchell last night.
Deputy Mitchell was supposed to give a radio interview this morning but pulled out and is now maintaining a media silence, a stance also taken by Deputy Noonan.
The afternoon has brought fresh rumours in media and political circles. It’s now believed that a statement will be issued before 4.00pm.
Meanwhile, the Fine Gael leader John Bruton appears set to stand firm and meet any challenge head-on.
