A coach carrying victims’ relatives arrived outside the court at 8.10 am local time.
They walked the few steps into the building in sombre mood, some dressed in black.
Bruce Smith, from the United States, whose 31-year-old English wife, Ingrid, died in the bombing, paused to speak to reporters and said: ‘‘This trial is just one of the steps on the road to justice.’’
He said that whoever the bombers were they were acting on orders.
‘‘We should be trying the leaders like we did at Nuremberg and not the privates.’’
Asked how he would feel if the two Libyans in the dock were convicted, the former Pan Am pilot said: ‘‘Certainly not happy. But probably a little bit satisfied that some of the punishment and the retribution is being started after 12 years.’’
