Subbuteo streakers 'a bit of fun' - shopkeeper

The man responsible for introducing streakers to Subbuteo is insisting there is nothing pornographic about the latest addition to the table-top football game.

Thanks to Tom Taylor, 48, a Subbuteo player and owner of the Woodentop shop in Lichfield, Staffordshire, play can now be interrupted by male or female streakers... and a policeman who gives chase across the pitch.

Each character, standing just three-quarters of an inch tall in stocking feet, is antomically correct down to the smallest detail.

They have been made by Tom, whose shop specialises in table football games, and each set costs £7.99.

"It just came to me one day, that the only thing we hadn't got to make the game totally realistic is streakers," Tom said.

"Some traditionalists say it's a bit obscene or pornographic, but it's only meant to be a bit of fun. Britain invented football and table football - this is just another home-grown addition to the game."

He explained that any player could introduce the streaker - who climbs out of the crowd - at key moments, like at an open goal.

The male or female streaker is then flicked across the pitch in the hope it will break the concentration of the opposition. The other player must then flick and hit the streaker with the policemen before the naked offender is 'arrested' and removed from the pitch.

Tom has introduced the characters into his local Subbuteo leagues and hopes they'll catch on among the game's 70,000 UK devotees.

Tom doubts the characters will be sanctioned by the Federation of International Sports Table Football. He says: "We've written our own rules, but I don't think they'll be accepted by the international body."
