The Minister for Defence is in Switzerland today for the official handover of a fleet of 40 new armoured personnel carriers.

The Swiss Piraha 3s, which offer the best level of safety and security for soldiers, were ordered in 1999 to replace existing troop carriers.

Command variants, a repair and recovery vehicle and an ambulance are also on order.

Irish troops will spend four months in Switzerland this year training how to operate and maintain them, before returning home in the summer with the first six new armoured cars.
