Robbie Fowler has rebuffed claims that Jari Litmanen's arrival at Anfield means the end of his association with the club.
Fowler missed the Worthington Cup semi-final defeat to Crystal Palace on Wednesday while Litmanen came off the bench to set up Liverpool's only goal.
But Fowler believes Litmanen's arrival will boost Liverpool's chances of winning three trophies this season.
"I think some people have just assumed that he has come to take my place," said Fowler of Litmanen.
"It doesn't necessarily mean one in, one out. Because of certain events last week, I think it was easy to say those things.
"But the way I see it is that we lost two forward players when Erik Meijer went to Hamburg and Titi Camara signed for West Ham.
"People shouldn't forget that, and so this is the reason the club has gone and brought someone else in. In other words, it's been a case of two out and one in."
Fowler has not put a word out of place of late in his carefully thought-out reactions - mostly speaking on his own website or via the mouths of advisers - to the current situation.
He is not going to start making mistakes now about the arrival of Litmanen.
He said: "Anyone who has watched European football for several years will know all about Jari. He made his name at Ajax where he won a European Cup medal and he has proved that he is a great player.
"It's true that he didn't play many games for Barcelona, but I don't think people should read anything into that.
"Sometimes things go for you when you join a new club and sometimes they don't. But the simple fact that Jari was signed by Barcelona in the first place says a lot about him.
"Not only that, Jari has made his mark at international level, and he was very good when Finland played England in the World Cup qualifier earlier this season."
