Former Sheffield Wednesday manager Ron Atkinson has accused the club of being run with what he calls almost non-league thinking.
And he blames the board's "short-sightedness" and a "failure to show ambition" for the Owls current crisis.
Paul Jewell was sacked as boss on Monday with the club in danger of sliding down to the Second Division.
But Atkinson said: "When it was apparent last season that Danny Wilson was in serious trouble they should have re-invested to make sure the club did not go down.
"Instead Wednesday slipped out of the Premiership and rather than everything being geared to getting straight back up they are being run with almost non-league thinking.
"I feel sorry for Paul Jewell. Basically he was swimming upstream and I doubt if Sir Alex Ferguson could have done any better.
"Paul not only had to do the job with his hands tied but also had to get rid of the high earners."
