Mobile phone sales top 400 million in 2000

Nokia, the world's most productive mobile phone maker, has increased its lead over its rivals and sold 128 million mobile phones last year.

The firms says this represents a 64% increase on 1999.

That would give it more than a 30% market share as the Finland-based company says the total number of mobile phone sales worldwide in 2000 was 405 million - a 45% increase on '99.

Markets had been expecting even higher sales from Nokia and the company's share price has dived more than 17.5% on the Helsinki Stock Exchange.
