The death toll on Irish roads has risen to 53 since the start of the New Year.

Another two people died last night following accidents in Cavan and Longford.

These two incidents have pushed the death toll higher, with an average of more than one death a day since the start of the year.

The first of the latest accidents happened near Granard in Co Longford when an elderly pedestrian was struck by a passing car.

In Co Cavan, a 28-year-old man died in a two car collision.

Neither of the victims’ names will be released until all family members have been contacted.
