Taoiseach issues roadwork warnings

The Taoiseach has warned companies who dig up the nation's roads and streets, adding to the gridlock, that they cannot continue to stop the traffic.

Bertie Ahern said the current level of disruption is unacceptable and he is now considering the establishment of a powerful planning and transport body.

Speaking this afternoon, Mr Ahern confirmed his belief that sorting out Dublin's transport system is now a critical issue.

It is a matter of frustration for the Government that, despite massive investment in infrastructure and public transport such as the quality bus corridors, the traffic still crawls along.

The main culprit, according to the Taoiseach, is the continuing cycle of roadworks, with various utility companies digging up the same section street within the space of a few weeks.

In a clear warning to the companies, he said he now understands the arguments in favour of a powerful land use and transport body to oversee the implementation of a proper plan to get Dublin moving.
