Marine rescue units are working to evacuate 27 crew members from a Ukrainian ship that ran into trouble in stormy weather off Spain's north-western coast.

Marine rescue units are working to evacuate 27 crew members from a Ukrainian ship that ran into trouble in stormy weather off Spain's north-western coast.

The vessel, Novocherkasska, appealed for help from Vigo shortly after midnight when its wood cargo shifted and cause the ship to list badly. The ship is some 60 miles from shore.

By midday, rescue units, hindered by bad weather, had managed to rescue six of the crew by helicopter, Spanish National Radio said. Three rescue vessels have moved into the area to assist in the operation.
