Govt failing its responsibilities on road safety

Fine Gael has accused the government of being unable to implement its own plan on road safety after a year in which the accident death toll was up for the first time in three years.

Fine Gael has accused the government of being unable to implement its own plan on road safety after a year in which the accident death toll was up for the first time in three years.

Party spokesman Denis Naughten TD said this was highlighted by the Government's recent admission that it would not meet its target of publishing the Road Traffic Bill by the end of 2000.

Deputy Naughten further criticised the lack of speed cameras on the roads and the fact that a second-level education programme is currently running two years late.

The government's overall failure to enforce a real strategy on the issue was resulting in a continuing spiral of road deaths, he added.
