It has been revealed that Sinn Fein's Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness had a 90-minute meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blair at Downing St this afternoon.
Sinn Fein said the meeting concentrated almost exclusively on the issue of policing.
A party source described the British proposals as "lacking in certainty", although added that negotiations would continue.
Sinn Fein has repeatedly said that the proposed reform of the RUC does not match the promises made in the Good Friday Agreement.
