A young man has died in an overnight road accident in Co Cork.

The 19-year-old man was fatally injured when the car he was driving collided with a wall in Charleville at around 11.10pm last night.

The accident happened on the R515, Smiths Road, Charleville.

Three passengers in the car, two females and one male (all aged in their late teens), were taken by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick.

The scene of the collision was examined by Garda forensic collision investigators and the road has since reopened to traffic.

The Coroner has been notified.

Update 8.58m: Separately, an investigation has been launched after a man was knocked down on the Gort road in Clare last night.

He is understood to be in a serious condition in hospital.
