The body of a young man has been recovered from the sea in Co Clare.

The alarm was raised at around 8.15am today when emergency services received a report of a body in the water close to the beach in Kilkee.

The local unit of the Irish Coast Guard was alerted and along with gardaí, responded to the scene.

Shortly before 9am, personnel from Kilkee Coast Guard located the body understood to be a 22-year-old male from north Cork.

The body was recovered from the water and taken to the Coast Guard station where a doctor had been asked to attend.

The remains have since been taken to University Hospital Limerick where a post mortem examination and formal identification will take place.

Gardaí are investigating the discovery. It is understood the man may have fallen into the water during the night.
