The Workplace Relations Commission is to enter discussions with SIPTU and Transdev in an effort to avoid planned strikes by Luas drivers.

Last week Luas drivers engaged in a 48-hour strike last week, with further industrial action planned for March 8 and St Patrick's Day.

The union is asking for pay hikes of up to 53% over five years.

"Having met with both parties in the Luas Dispute, the Commission has decided, in the public interest, to enter a series of intensive negotiations with the parties throughout next week and hopefully, through agreement, to avoid any further disruption to Luas services," a short statement from the Workplace Relations Commission read.
